What you'll practice

Getting to know the car
Learn the vehicle controls: steering, gas and brake, turn signals, mirrors, lights and wipers.

Everyday road skills
Stop signs, changing traffic lights, turns, U-turns, lane changes, merging and parking.

Real-world conditions
Practice in daytime and at night, in rain and other weather, on quiet streets and busier roads.

Skills you'll build
Road awareness, pedestrian safety, spatial awareness, judgment and confidence behind the wheel.

Who it's for
Anyone 16 and up who is interested in learning to drive, wants to reduce driving anxiety, or is working toward a road test someday. No learner's permit needed. Many participants use VR Driving to get comfortable before starting lessons with a real driving instructor. It is practice, not a licensed driver education course.

The setup
A professional steering wheel, pedals and gear shifter on a wheel stand, with a comfortable gaming chair. The car can be set to automatic or manual, and you can choose to use the VR Driving Simulation on a large gaming monitor instead of VR.

How each class works
Every class is one hour, one-on-one with your VR trainer: a short lesson, hands-on practice on the simulator, then a debrief review of results. Your VR trainer sits beside you the whole time to coach, support and keep an eye on how you're doing, and tracks your progress so each class builds on the last.

What to wear
Comfortable clothing. Parents and support staff are welcome to observe.

How to pay
$96 per class. VR Driving can be paid through an OPWDD Self-Direction budget (Community Classes) or privately.

Common questions

Will this get me a driver's license?
No. VR Driving is practice, not a licensed driver education course or a road test. It helps you build skills and confidence so you're ready to take lessons with a real driving instructor.

Do I need a learner's permit?
No. All you need is an interest in learning to drive.

Will it make me dizzy or carsick?
Most people feel fine. Your VR trainer sits beside you the whole time and watches how you're doing, and you can stop and rest whenever you need to.

What if I get nervous or frustrated?
That's what your trainer is there for. They coach you step by step, adjust the difficulty, and start on quiet streets before busier roads.

Can I practice something specific?
Yes. Highway merging, parking, night driving or a tricky intersection: just tell your VR trainer what you would like to work on.

How will I know I'm improving?
Your trainer tracks your progress each class and gives you suggestions for what to practice next.

Can a parent or support person watch?
Yes, they're welcome to observe.

What about seizures?
VR headsets carry a manufacturer warning for people with a history of seizures or epilepsy. If that applies to you, please check with your doctor before booking.

I have mobility needs. Can I still join?
Please contact us before booking at clientsupport@obriencmc.com so we can talk through whether the setup will work for you.
